Rod Sands, CEO

Rod Sands
President & Chief Executive Officer

Rod Sands has dedicated nearly 35 years of his professional life to Explorer Pipeline. Rod started at Explorer as a technical assistant in 1973. He worked his way up to the position of chief operating officer before taking early retirement in 2005. Three years later, the opportunity to lead the organization drew Rod back to Explorer.

Rod’s career has taken him across the United States. In addition to his work at Explorer, Rod has been a private consultant and held positions with other pipeline and engineering companies. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri.

An active volunteer, Rod has belonged to the Rotary Club of Tulsa for 30 years and serves on the Tulsa Area United Way’s board of directors. He is also a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Association of Oil Pipe Lines and the Pipe Liners Club of Tulsa.

Understanding the safety culture at Explorer: Safety means looking after others, caring for others and practicing constant awareness, explains Rod. It’s about taking ownership. Safety becomes part of who each team member truly is.

Curtis Craig, VP & General Counsel

Curtis Craig
Vice President & General Counsel

Curtis Craig joined Explorer Pipeline as a corporate attorney in 1979. From 1982 to 1988, Curtis worked with the U.S. Department of Energy and in private legal practice. He rejoined Explorer as general counsel in 1988, and in 200 6 was named vice president.

Curtis earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Oklahoma State University. He received his juris doctorate from the University of Tulsa.

Helping young people reach their full potential is important to Curtis. He serves on the Rotary Club of Tulsa’s committee to support and operate Camp Enterprise, a business-style retreat for high school students. Curtis has also coached several youth sports teams and was involved in helping form the Junior Comets Wrestling Club.

Three reasons why Curtis works at Explorer: He can make a major impact on other people and on the company’s performance. He takes pride in working at a company that is a leader in its industry. And, last but not least, Explorer’s values align nicely with Curtis’ own values.

Tom Jensen, VP Operations

Tom Jensen

Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Langston University and a master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma City University. He’s also completed Northwestern University’s Pipeline Economics and Management Executive Program and the Advanced Management Program offered at Duke University.

Tom’s unique Explorer story: Jensen and Explorer Pipeline have, in a sense, grown up together. Tom was barely out of his teens when he joined the company, then just 6 years old itself. Doing his personal best – even when the task at hand was raking rock or painting pipe – and staying focused on promotion are two things Tom counts as keys to his success at the company.
